A very rare two piece oversize salad serving set with sterling gold washed bowls and stag horn handles decorated in the Japanese taste. The length is 14 3/4". These are probably the work of Gorham and retailed by Theodore B Starr. Circa 1880. The work is similar to the Gorham Hizen pattern but these servers are way over the top.

EX2350 Sterling Asparagus Tongs

A Victorian American sterling silver Victorian asparagus tongs marked sterling only and engraved "Anna". Circa 1875. The blades are gold washed and the handles and blades are all finely engraved. The top section is riveted to the larger bottom half. Length: 10 1/2". Note: Good example of a rather unusual style of American silver asparagus tongs.

EX8635 Important Shiebler Two Piece Antique Silver Fish Set

A sterling fish serving set by Shiebler with applied cast sea creatures including fish, octopus, starfish and seaweed. Length of slice: 11" Trident fork: 9 1/2". Combined weight: 9.75 troy ounces. Small neat Gothic "M" monogram.

Note: Competition for the Gorham's Narragansett pattern. The application is more sparse but tastefully done. These are rare examples and must have been expensive when purchased at the time.

Applied flatware by makers Shiebler and Gorham represent the most adventurous design of the 1870's. Pieces of this design, quality and manufacture are considered museum quality.

EX2217 Whiting Sterling Silver Exotic Fish Serving Set

A two piece sterling silver fish set, monogrammed on the back of the handles, with applied net over a satin finished embossed fish on the front of the handles. Slice length: 12 1/4". Fork length: 9" Combined weight: 8.85 troy ounces. Note: Whiting's unique and distinctive design once again combining some hand work (the applied netting) with carefully thought out nautical and sea life motifs. In this case the slight satin finish under the applied wire just sets off the handle; a subtle process but one that makes one turn and look twice.

An unusual antique sterling silver olive spoon with pierced floral embossed bowl and applied three dimensional olive and leaves on a naturalistic handle. Length: 6 1/8". Circa 1890. Monogrammed and inscribed on the olive. Note: This version of the Gorham three dimensional sterling olive spoon is less common than the olive spears of the same period made by Gorham.

EX1936 Emperor pattern by Knowles and Ladd

A fabulous three dimensional spoon with applied cast bird on an engraved bowl. In brilliant crisp condition with a gold washed satin finished engraved bowl. Length: 9 1/2". The purpose of the bird in the bowl is difficult to fathom but it is original to the piece. It makes the spoon unique in design. Note: It is quite possible that the applied bird acted as a barrier to catch berries when serving from a bowl. Knowles did some wonderful gilding, and very good quality work during this period. I would date the spoon about 1870. The firm was in Providence, Rhode Island.

EX1885 Large Aesthetic Sterling Ice Cream Knife

Aesthetic ice cream knife, very large and heavy by Dominick & Haff depicting lily pads on a pond (hence the name "Pond" pattern) as well as dragonflies, all on a hand hammered surface. The reverse of the blade has an intricate monogram. Length 12". Weight 6.35 troy ounces. See our fish set in the same pattern. Note: This series by Dominick & Haff is usually somewhat heavy and very good quality. The larger pieces are quite magnificent and museum quality. The design is very distinctive and for a collector of the finest American flatware a single piece of this series would made sense because it usually shows the best of Japanese influence tastefully executed.

Two wonderful ladles, one soup and the other sauce

A pair of hand made Victorian ladles circa 1865 marked sterling only and presumably by Whiting with applied cast three dimensional bird on the handles and ivy hand applied to the handles. The handle join the gold washed engraved bowl with three ivy leaves and silver wire on the reverse of the bowl. Pristine condition. Length of soup ladle is 14"; length of sauce ladle 9"

A Shiebler sterling olive spoon and fork with applied seaweed. Length 11". This type of work was done by Shiebler in the 1880's. They were expensive and consequently rare today.
